A little Sasha Frere-Jones

The xx review (especially for Cam)

His review of the latest Massive Attack (because I would love to discuss it with anyone willing)

I would also just like to say

. . . that your final critical essay pitches are the best batch I've ever seen. You've individually and collectively come up with some bold and fascinating ideas. I can't wait to see them. Bravo!

Some relevant "Crazy Heart" links

Don't forget we're meeting early tonight for dinner before our screening of "Crazy Heart": 5:15 p.m., Humphrey House.

Here's a piece about the novel the film is based on and some history of the writer and his intentions/influences.

Here's A.O. Scott's review, although I don't recommend your reading it before writing your own!

And here's a very cool audio slideshow of Jeff Bridges on the road from last Sunday's magazine. You can find more images of this year's best performers as a lead up to the Oscars by searching around a little. Enjoy!

Welcome to our own little corner of the blogosphere!

If you are checking out this blog, you are more than likely registered for the arts journalism class offered at Kalamazoo College this term. I cannot wait to meet you as a group; however, I'll be away at a journalism seminar this week, so class is canceled until next week.

And yet, the course goes on! You have things to do before we meet January 13:

1. Thoroughly read the syllabus I emailed you and please email me with questions.

2. Go to blogger.com and set up a blog for this class.
Do so by Wednesday night at 9 p.m. I recommend you use our designated class time to do this. Title it something appropriately professional and arts journalism-ish, put up a photo of yourself that is in no way compromising were a potential employer (or your professor) to see it, become a follower of my blog, create a class blogroll in which you can link to others in the class, and email me the link to your new blog.

3. Go see a movie!
Your options are: Sherlock Holmes, Avatar or Nine. All three are showing downtown at the Rave cinema on Portage Road.
(Rave Motion Pictures Cityplace 14 180 Portage Road, Kalamazoo, MI - (269) 381-5732) It is within walking distance from campus, although if you see a movie at night, make sure to walk in a group. Tickets for students cost $5.

4. Write about the movie you saw.
In order to do this, you need to take notes during the viewing (so if you've already seen the film, go see it again, or choose a different film to write about). Your review should be 500 words long, and it is due Monday, Jan. 11 at 4 p.m. Drop off a hard copy (double spaced, stapled, in 12-pt. Times New Roman font, per the syllabus) outside my office door (Humphrey House 212) AND post it to your blog.

5. Read each others' reviews on the blogs (check and comment on them by Wednesday morning).

6. Put together $22, either in cash, or in a check written out to Benson Distrubution, for your New York Times subscription.
This is your main written text for this class (in addition to Afterglow and the films, television and live performances you'll be reviewing) and is required. The only way you're getting out of it is if you're required in another class to subscribe. If that is the case, let me know no later than Wednesday night.

Finally, make sure to have fun!
